Case Study – Re-design

Client Brief:

Update approximately 65sqm of outdated and tired planting across four beds with a more interesting and modern schema, sympathetic to the architecture of the house whilst introducing colour wherever possible. Retain viable material and improve as far as possible. Establish better soil health.

Outcome:

  • A new planting schema agreed with the client, incorporating retained material for approximately 30% of the new design. For the remainder, appropriate plants for the garden aspect and soil defined, creating a garden with colour and interest across all seasons.
  • Unwanted or inappropriate trees, shrubs and plants removed.
  • All beds dug to 60cm depth to break up a root mat and soil pan that was preventing the plants from growing properly.
  • 10 mature shrubs re-generated using formative pruning techniques. A number of specimens were discovered to have strong multi-stemmed forms underneath an overgrown canopy, helping to provide structure and impact to the garden whilst saving the client money.
  • Serious infestations of chafer grub and vine weevil removed by hand and subsequently treated for organically where needed.
  • Serious infestations of chafer grub and vine weevil removed by hand and subsequently treated for organically where needed.
  • 4 cubic m of organic material added to improve the soil structure and water retention in the long term.
  • 220 plants and bulbs sourced and planted, including a number of unusual plants to provide the span of seasonal flowering.
In the photographs here you see the third of the four beds; originally a random mixture of fruit and magnolia trees with assorted herbaceous perennials, this was replaced by a structured design maximising the length and depth of the bed. Existing plants were removed and replaced by Prunus lusitcanica standards supported by a purple and white spring / summer colour scheme (including Iris, Agapanthus, Lavender, Allium and Salvia) and winter interest from statement Edgeworthia specimen plants.

“Thanks so much for all your help with the reconstruction of the front garden – we are really happy with the outcome and look forward to seeing it develop over the coming years. The effort that you put into devising a suitable design appropriate for the house as well as our soil was great; bringing it in on budget despite the hiccups along the way was just the icing on the cake. Be sure to keep some time in your diary for when we re-do the back garden!”
